John On Wine Blog Notes Gold Medal Winner 2013 Moniker Chardonnay

John On Wine blog reports that the 2013 Moniker Chardonnay won a Gold Medal at the 2015 Mendocino County Wine Competiton!

The rich and bold, New World-style Moniker Chardonnay was made primarily from grapes grown at La Ribera, the Thornhill family’s home vineyard along the banks of the Russian River.

After gently pressing a combination of whole-cluster and de-stemmed grapes, we fermented and aged the wine four months sur lie in American oak barrels. This added a sturdy, complex framework for our fruit’s signature pear, apple and crisp mineral flavors.

We then blended in a lush, barrel-fermented Viognier sourced from nearby Hopland and another subtly spicy lot of Chardonnay aged in French oak for a wine that is equal parts nuanced and approachable.

Mendocino’s late bud break is very special from a viticultural standpoint. We are able to pick much later than other regions, allowing the grapes to achieve an optimal balance of sugar and acidity.
